What leaders do

The primary role of a leader is to shape the ‘culture’ – the team or organizational culture which he or she is responsible for or is a part of. For example, if there is a culture of defeatism and low morale, then this is likely to prevent the individuals concerned from pulling together as a team and meeting their goals of achieving their vision. A leader will therefore rise to the challenge of trying to shape a more positive culture.

A culture is a set of habits, unwritten rules and taken-for-granted assumptions. The idea is captured by the phrase: ‘the way we do things round here’. A good leader does his or her level best to ensure that they are encouraging a positive and supportive culture and discouraging aspects of a culture that are counterproductive – negativity and cynicism, for example.
